Flooring and Dung Clearance
So as to reduce ammonia emission and odour it is important to get the slurry and manure out of the livestock building as quickly as possible and also diminish the surfaces from which the manure can evaporate. In Denmark as a result of new environmental legislation new floor types, scraper systems and slurry gutters have been developed, which are able to contribute to an overall reduction in ammonia and odour emissions from buildings.
Several types of solid floors with drains have been designed specifically for cattle. These floors can be kept clean very effectively with special scrapers. Dryer and cleaner floors have a beneficial impact on both the environment and on the cattle’s welfare.
New kinds of slurry gutters that frequently discharge produce a smaller surface area, thus contributing to the reduction of the total emission. Placing cooling coils at the bottom of the slurry gutters is another efficient method of reducing emission, as cold slurry does not evaporate. Finally good results have been achieved by adding sulphuric acid to the slurry.
