China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and the province of Guangdong has developed into one of its largest manufacturing and export regions. However, the main economic foundation of Guangdong is primarily agriculture -- rice is the major crop. Moreover, since less than one-fifth of the land is under cultivation, agriculture is by necessity extremely intensive. As a result of this rapid development and intensive cultivation, the diverse environmental needs of China and the province of Guandong have lately increased and are expected to grow in the future. Consequently, the Chinese Government has prioritised the environmental issues to cover land and coastal degradation, deforestation, food and water security, atmospheric pollution, biodiversity loss, urbanisation and freshwater quality.
SustainAgri will visit the region from the 19th June to the 25th june, 2004, together with a delegation of public officials and private enterprises from Funen.
In order to support the sustainable development of China and the province of Guangdong, SustainAgri will offer integrated intermediary services for its agricultural and horticultural industries which can help to strengthen the ability of China’s farms and nurseries to access, assess, develop, introduce and apply the very latest environment-friendly technology within the area of sustainable agriculture.
The aim of the promotion tour is to seek out cooperative partners and to promote the showcase and thus its member organizations.
